Coluracetam just might be the next new nootropic to dominate the market of brain supplements in the coming years.
Like many of the other most popular nootropics, Coluracetam is a Racetam compound derived from Piracetam.
It was invented in Japan and only first registered in 2005 by the Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharmaceutical Corporation. The patent has since been transferred to another company by the name of BrainCells Inc. and they have been primarily responsible for conducting testing.
During 2010, Phase 2A trials were completed and the company indicated that Coluracetam shows promise as a treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and also general anxiety problems.
While the medical community has expressed a lot of interest in this cognitive enhancement substance, nootropic users are also keenly interested in learning how this supplement will work for them.
Coluracetam
Coluracetam has a lot of characteristics in common with other Racetams, but there are also some important distinctions.
It is thought to work by increasing Choline uptake into neurons, even if they are already impaired or damaged.
Some evidence suggests that Coluracetam might be particularly effective in the areas of the brain involved in visual processing.
In the future, we may see Coluracetam adopted by more medical practitioners as a drug for preventing and treating retinal and optic nerve injury.
It gets its name from the fact that it has a noticeable effect on improving eyesight, making colors and shapes more vivid.
While its distribution is still limited at the moment, there are thousands of Americans who have experimented with this nootropic and seen positive results.
What are some of the benefits of Coluracetam, how does it work, and what is the proper dosage to take in order to avoid side effects?
Coluracetam Benefits:
One of the most exciting benefits of Coluracetam is possible long-term improvements in memory-impaired individuals. Since there only been a limited amount of human testing at this point, the animal experiments serve as the best evidence of possible benefits.
The administration of Coluracetam to rats has been observed to improve their memory using a commonly accepted maze test.
They also showed continued memory improvements even after the supplement had left their system, indicating some type of long-term effect.
The Phase 2A trials have also shown that this supplement may be effective in treating people who are suffering from MDD along with general anxiety disorder. These positive effects were shown in patients that had not seen any benefits from the use of other anti-depressants in the past.
A full third (36%) of the participants saw significant improvement with Coluracetam in the test used to assess depression levels. Many users also say that this supplement reduces stress and anxiety levels while promoting feelings of deep peace and contentment.
There are even some reports of this supplement helping to potentiate Nootropic-like effects (improved memory, enhanced cognition, better decision making, etc…) and even vision improvements when used with other Racetams.
Mechanism of Action:
The primary method of action for Coluracetam is as a Choline uptake enhancer. That means that it actually improves the level and efficiency of Choline use within the body and brain.
This process of using Choline is key to the synthesis of a powerful neurotransmitter within the brain called Acetylcholine. This chemical is thought to play a crucial role in the formation of memory, learning capacity, and a number of additional cognitive processes.
Another method of action is the potentiation of AMPA receptors within the brain for glutamate.
Of all of your neurotransmitters, glutamate is perhaps the most central for synaptic plasticity which is the ability of your neurons to make new connections to represent new memories.
Coluracetam Dosage:
Due to the novelty of this supplement, there is not yet a medically recommended dosage for Coluracetam. However, most of the studies indicate that a dosage of approximately 200 mg per day would be helpful to the average person.
Of course, the dosage may also depend upon your reasons for taking the supplement in the first place.
For those suffering from major depressive disorder taking up to 100 mg three times daily has shown to be effective. The same would probably be a reasonable dosage for those with general anxiety disorder.
If you already have a substantial amount of experience with some of the stronger racetams, you may find that starting with 200 mg a day is perfectly adequate. However, if you do not have as much experience with these supplement you may find that starting with as little as 20 mg will give you positive effects.
You can then increase your dosage over time after developing a familiarity to the supplement.
Side Effects & Toxicity:
Once again, due to the limited research history on Coluracetam there is not much information available regarding the toxicity levels of this supplement. However, it would seem that it is relatively safe, given the methods of action and similar structure to other Racetam supplements.
BrainCells has indicated that they did not observe any negative side effects when subjects used Coluracetam dosages up to 80 mg three times per day.
If we use the other racetams as our guide, the most common side effect you may encounter is headaches.
These can be counteracted by stacking this supplement with Alpha GPC, Centrophenoxine or CDP Choline which will lessen the occurrence of headaches in most people.
